Sustainability & Zero Waste

Sustainability? What is it? what does it mean for us?

For us, it means making choices that are good for everyone involved. That means making better and fairer choices that support the farmers, the soil, the planet and the people. It is about baking bread in a way that supports the Earth better.

Sustainability isn't a fancy marketing word that we use here, it's just woven into how we bake. And our comittment to sustainability is now at the very heart of what we do here.

We are only a small batch home bakery, but we believe that even the smallest of people, can make the biggest difference.

Responsible Sourcing

- We bake with 100% regeneratively farmed flour from Wildfarmed, supporting farming that not only puts soil health first, but promotes and restores soil health and biodiversity.

  • We also use heritage grains from Cornish Golden Grains, grown in Cornwall, and milled just 30 minutes from us for the freshest flour, drastically reducing food miles and preserving traditional varieties of wheat and grain.
  • All of our fruit and vegetables are 100% seasonal and only sourced directly from Cornish local farms using natural, chemical-free farming methods. Earthbound, Puddle Farm, local allotments & The Real Food Garden.
  • We are proud to partner with The Real Food Garden, acting as a pick-up point for their wonderful veg boxes, helping more local families access sustainable, healthy produce.

Packagaing Without Waste

  • We use zero plastic in any of our packagaing. 100% plastic free!!
  • All of our packagaing is fully recyclable and re-usable paper.
  • We are currently trialing locally made cotton reusable bread bags to further reduce our paper packaging.

Energy Efficiency

  • Wherever possible, we bake in full loads to avoid empty space in the oven and wasting energy.
  • We even use the oven as it's cooling to heat the kitchen when it's cold!

Food Waste & Circular Baking

  • Any unsold bread is now repurposed into new products, like bread pudding, or monkey bread
  • Unused sourdough starter is also turned into new products such as sourdough crackers, or discard is used to make cookies, added to brownies or other baked goodies, to minimise starter waste.
  • We are beginning our composting journey to ensure no food waste gets to landfill.

Community Impact

  • By choosing local produce and supporting Cornish farms, we keep money in the local economy and strengthen sustainable food networks.
  • We are developing ways to share bread skills & knowledge with our community, so that the real bread movement can keep getting stronger, with every generation.

Our Sustainability Score

Based on our practices across sourcing, packaging, energy, waste and community, we estimate that 83% of our bakery is already operating sustainably, With the addition of composting, looking into renewable energy and re-usable bread bags underway, we are on track to reach 90%+ alignment with best practice.

Our Goals for 2026

But we aren't stopping there! By the end of 2026, we aim to;

  • Power our bakery through a certified 100% renewable energy supplier.
  • Have a full composting system in place to divert all food waste from landfill.
  • Introduce reusable bread bags alongside recyclable paper packagin, to cut down on single use materials.
  • Grow our community projects
  • Publish a short annual impact report so you can all see exactly how we are progressing!
